Remembering Lulu Peyraud: A Centenarian's Legacy

Lucie 'Lulu' Peyraud, who lit up both the culinary and viticulture worlds, passed away on October 7, 2020, at the age of 102. Birthed into a world of flavors and aromas at Domaine Tempier in Bandol, France, she left an indelible mark that goes well beyond the vineyards she helped cultivate with her husband Lucien Peyraud.

Marrying into a family vineyard in 1936, Lulu's journey was not just about tending to vines. Together with Lucien, she propelled Domaine Tempier into international fame, particularly for its robust, Mourvèdre-based reds. They didn’t just stop at producing wines; they crafted a narrative of Bandol as a region of excellence, cementing its place on the global wine map.

A Culinary Pioneer in Her Own Right

But it was her mastery in the kitchen that arguably left long-lasting impressions. Lulu's Provençal cooking, a harmonious meld of simplicity and local flavors, was immortalized in her cookbook Lulu’s Provençal Table. Her recipes and the authenticity they exuded inspired the likes of Richard Olney, Alice Waters, and Jeremiah Tower, causing ripples in the culinary world, including the evolution of California Cuisine and the Slow Food movement.

A true testament to her influence, those who visited her kitchen carried forward her legacy into their own culinary endeavors. Her cooking style, rooted in fresh, local ingredients, became a beacon for chefs aiming to do the same.

Despite her advancing age, Lulu embodied vitality. Well into her 90s, she survived a broken leg and maintained her daily life rituals, including a zestful 50 swings a day. Her longevity, which she often humorously credited to daily red wine, particularly from Domaine Tempier, added to her unique charm.

With her passing, Bandol lost not just a matriarch but a legend whose warmth and wit were revered by many. She leaves behind seven children and a legacy that intertwined gastronomy, viticulture, and the rich tapestry of Provençal culture. No doubt, Lulu Peyraud's story will continue to inspire those who cherish the art of good living, fine wine, and delightful food.
